The sites in our main story take a civilized approach to matching up free- lancers with companies that have relevant projects. But some may prefer the raucous atmosphere of a trading floor. For those types, there are eBay-style project marketplaces. Here are some major auction-style project marketplaces, as well as a handful of freelancer sites that cater to specific audiences.

AUCTION-STYLE PROJECT MARKETPLACES

Ants.com This site offers open-style auctions with freelancers bidding on available projects. But with only nine categories of jobs and only a handful under each, you may end up earning more money through Ants.com’s referral system, where you earn a small fee for every friend you get to sign up.

eLance (www.elance.com) Bids are also open for the world to see at eLance. You can register and fill out a profile detailing your experience, desired pay rate, and objective, or you can immediately start browsing through the available projects. All business categories are covered, and a feedback system lets both buyers and sellers rate one another.

ICplanet (http://icplanet.com) Most of the projects you’ll find at lCplanet fall under the IT category. Though you can bid on projects after registering at the site, you cannot see what others have bid. This approach discourages freelancers from underbidding on projects or promising work they can’t deliver.

Monster Talent Market Part of the well- known Monster.com jobs site, Monster Talent Market (www.talentmarket.com) is an auction-based project marketplace that works in reverse. You fill out a detailed, multistep profile complete with references and your desired pay rate, which remains up on the site for five days, and companies bid on your profile. You cannot actively search for project work.

PROJECT MARKETPLACES FOR NICHES

Aquent (www.aquent.com) Formerly MacTemps, Aquent places full-time and part-time creative, Web, and technical professionals. A Timecards feature lets you keep track of your hours online. The JobAlert feature will e-mail you new job postings.

Imcor (www.imcor.com) Billing itself as The Portable Executive Company,” lmcor caters to companies looking to hire qualified interim management, If you find a something of interest after browsing through executive level positions, e-mail Imcor with your qualifications. After a screening process, lmcor will match you up with one of its clients.

MBAfreeAgent.com This site targets MBA- laden professionals. For those who crave stock options, a section is devoted to start-up companies. To check out job postings though, you’ll have to get past the lengthy registration form.
